  • Every generation of mobile technology has had a profound effect on the ways we communicate and access information. Each “G” has brought new capabilities and use cases, including some that developers hadn’t even thought of until the newest technology came along.

In order for communications services providers (CSPs) to stay ahead of the game, they need to not only deploy today’s latest 5G network technology, they also need to future-proof their networks to enable tomorrow’s 5G use cases.

5G Open RAN and NEC’s Open RAN Radio Units give you the ability to select the radio unit (RU) that best fits your use cases today, while ensuring interoperability with O-RAN specifications and other global standards to support the next wave of 5G solutions and applications.

NEC’s Radio Units are compact and designed for easy installation – especially in dense urban areas where space is limited – and can be deployed anywhere on common frequency bands to meet your requirements for coverage and capacity.

Open RAN technology from NEC enables flexibility and agility to adapt and grow your network as your customers’ usage patterns change and new use cases emerge.

NEC is the leading Open RAN vendor

Open RAN Pioneer

NEC was first to deliver O-RAN compliant 5G radio units for large-scale commercial deployment, as well as the world’s first O-RAN massive MIMO deployment in dense urban environments.

NEC actively participates in and supports Telecom Infrastructure Project (TIP) and O-RAN Alliance standards, designs, tests and showcases.

Field Proven

NEC has a rich history developing RAN technologies from 2G to 5G, and has supplied hundreds of thousands of radios to operators around the globe. In addition to large Japanese mobile network operators, NEC supports Tier 1 MNOs worldwide with state-of-the-art products plus systems integration and other services capabilities.

Dynamic Technology

Massive MIMO AAS (Active Antenna System) uses full digital beamforming to improve capacity and user experience. Radio units for low- and mid-bands allow cost-effective deployment of coverage, enabling network-wide Open RAN deployment.

NEC’s Open RAN Radio Unit portfolio includes radios for a variety of use cases, from high-performance massive MIMO systems to radio units for common frequency bands supporting high-capacity and wide-area deployments. NEC RUs support all O-RAN standards and are compatible with all O-RAN DU/CU vendors.

Use Case

High Capacity for Urban Areas

To improve radio quality in dense deployments, it’s essential to control and mitigate signal interference. Massive MIMO deployment in 3.5 GHz frequency bands with wide bandwidths substantially increases network capacity and performance.  NEC Massive MIMO with full digital beamforming optimizes coverage and capacity in urban centers and densely populated metro areas.

Ubiquitous Coverage

While massive MIMO delivers capacity and performance on higher frequency bands, operators will also have to utilize lower frequencies for coverage. NEC Radio Units support most commonly available low- and mid-band frequencies, and come in various configurations and power levels with single and multi-band capabilities supporting a variety of operator needs.

Sub-urban Capacity

Where the high capacity provided by massive MIMO is not required, operators can deploy 3.5 GHz spectrum using NEC’s TDD radios. These radios are a cost-efficient way to improve performance and capacity outside urban areas where the traffic demand is lower.
